Retrospective 2008: Frans Bromet

This year the 21st international documentary film festival amsterdam (IDFA) dedicates a special programme to the work of Dutch documentary maker and cameraman Frans Bromet. IDFA will be screening a selection of sixteen films, including 'Een tip van de sluier' from 1980.

Frans Bromet has made a few hundred documentaries, but has become known to the general public in the Netherlands principally as the maker of the VPRO series Buren [Neighbours]. Bromet studied at the Filmacademie in Amsterdam from 1962 to 1964. Striking features of Bromet's work are his boundless curiosity and confrontational way of asking questions.

He has made a large number of films, sixteen of which are included in the Frans Bromet Retrospective at IDFA this year. David de Jongh's film Frans Bromet, Portrait of a Filmmaker also screens as part of the retrospective.

On Saturday, 22 November, Frans Bromet will give a masterclass.
