HONOR KILLINGS, (eerwraak)
2007, 60 minutes
Yeter Akin and Seren Dalkiran, two Dutch girls of Turkish-Kurd origin, went to the South-East of Turkey in 2004 and 2005, to make a film about honour killing. They are not professional filmmakers, their goal was to make an educational film. With this movie they try to start the discussion on honour killings and honour related violence and harmful traditions at public secondary schools. Documentary filmmaker Frans Bromet follows them in this process and tries to find out what drives and motivates them. Why do they involve themselves in this subject, what does the concept of honour mean to them and are they subjected to unwritten laws too? Furthermore, Bromet tries to find out what role honour killings play in the Netherlands, what teenagers think about the issue and he also interviews an honour killer.

ESCAPING THE FLOOD, (Het water komt)
2006, 50 minutes
For over forty years documentary filmmaker Frans Bromet has lived with his wife Anita in Ilpendam, a beautiful village in a Dutch polder. The small village also locates the production company of Frans Bromet, where he works together with his two daughters and son-in-law.. All of them live with their families in this area surrounded by water. Frans Bromet considers life along the Purmertrekcanal as an idyll come true.

Until bad news about climate changes broke their happiness abruptly.

It appears the dikes will not be resistant to the rising of the sea-level. The climate changes will lead to large floods. Experts predict that Ilpendam will not be able to resist the water, some predictions say this may even happen within a short period of fifty years.

Frans wonders whether it is best to leave Ilpendam soon and set up life and work with the entire family somewhere else. In this documentary he tries to gather as much information as possible from scientists and other experts. He shares his findings with his family, who have a hard time making a wise decision on a controversial issue.

Masterclass Frans Bromet
Hollands' most obstinate filmmaker and interviewer Frans Bromet is hard to categorize. His unique but sober camera style, together with his empathic presence, create an intimate atmosphere in which contributors are willing to open up. His session looks at the typical ingredients for a Bromet film, one by one. Moderator will be Raoul Heertje.

Sat 22/11/08 13:00 - 15:00, Escape, Club

After that Frans Bromet; portrait of a filmmaker, the film by David de Jongh has it's first run.

Frans Bromet, portrait of a filmmaker
2008
'It all starts with interest. If you don't have it, you'd better quit. I have the ability to listen to people. How many people can do that?' Documentary filmmaker Frans Bromet's routine is characterised by his sing-song, nasal voice, sober photography and emphatic presence. The Dutch filmmaker David de Jongh Bromet's former trainee ventured an analysis of Bromet's work and a search for the person behind the documentary-maker. For one year, he followed his former tutor and talked to many friends, family and colleagues from the world of film and documentary. A world, by the way, where Bromet does not feel at ease; he does not really like people who receive subsidies, something he subtly explains to his follower. For his portrait, De Jongh uses Bromet's method: he films and interviews at the same time although to his master's dismay he does not shoot from the shoulder, but from a tripod. Halfway, the documentary changes tack, from Bromet's work to the man. While the interviews alternate with archive footage, De Jongh delves for the private individual behind Bromet and his family and eventually manages to penetrate quite deeply. Something Bromet is visibly uncomfortable with. 'I'd rather see it the other way around.'
